Basis Of The Insurance Group (The Insurance Group)

Insurance groups are assigned to vehicles, commercial and privately owned, for the purpose of arranging insurance premiums. They are given by the automobile and insurance associations based in the UK. One of them is the Association of British Insurers. These associations meet regularly to suggest each new vehicle a group number.

Basis of Insurance Groups

There are a number of main aspects that determine a vehicle’s insurance grouping which are :

  • Door Plan
  • Body Type
  • Fuel Type
  • Gear Box
  • Vehicle Make
  • Vehicle Model
  • Vehicle Series
  • Vehicle Cubic Capacity
  • Manufacturing Year

Door Plan

This refers to the number of doors a vehicle has (3, 4 or 5). A vehicle such as G6 Sedan with 4 doors will have a different insurance group than a Honda Civic 3-door hatchback.

Body Style

A diverse range of body styles of the same vehicle will each have unique insurance groups. The Honda civic is manufactured in different body styles such as 2 door coupe, 3-door hatchback, 4 door sedan, 4 door station wagon and 5 door hatchback.

Fuel Type

You can have a petrol or diesel fuel type. An Alfa Romeo 147 3-door hatchback using petrol will be in insurance group number 14. An Alfa Romeo 149 4-door using diesel will be in insurance group number 12.

Vehicle’s Make

There is a huge range of vehicle makes in Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales. Some of these are Ford, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Audi, Bentley, BMW, Bugatti, Chrysler, Citroen, Daewoo, Daihatsu, Fiat, Honda, Hyundai, Kia and Lexus. Each will have individual insurance group numbers ranging from 1-20.

Vehicle Model

A vehicle can have a number of models which are the basis of insurance grouping. The Alfa Romeo company has quite a lot of models. Some of these are 159 5-door sportswagon, 159 4-door Saloon and 147 3-door hatchback.

Vehicle Type

All vehicles are manufactured in various vehicle types which indicate passenger capacity. In the case of the Alfa Romeo, it indicates its vehicle type by the terms Estate, Hatchback, Saloon and Soft Top.

Vehicle Series

Vehicle series is a row of numbers that tell you the design modifications in a certain vehicle make and model. Examples of these series numbers include Toyota Corolla 1.6, Toyota Yaris 1.3 and Toyota Aygo 1.0.

Vehicle Cubic Capacity

Vehicle firms have vehicles with cubic capacity specifications which are considered during insurance grouping. Examples of vehicle cubic capacity include Hyundai Santro with a cubic capacity of 1086 and Hyundai Getz with a cubic capacity of 1341.

Manufacturing Year

A 1986 Toyota Corolla will have a different insurance group compared to a 2006 Toyota Corolla. The difference in grouping is due to the fact that early versions have basic car fittings, average performance capacity and less cubic capacity. The later model will have top of the line fittings and powerful engines.
